FRANKFORT, INDIANA – CORE Community Center is thrilled to announce their recent news of receiving a grant from IU Health for the Get SMART Jr. program.

Get SMART curriculum originates from Calla Collaborative Health. This Lafayette-based organization exists to create, develop, implement, and distribute evidence-based, ethical, empowerment model substance use and mental health prevention & early intervention programs. Lisa Werth, founder of Calla, has been active throughout the state and region advocating for this program for adults, youth, and preteens as an intervention and early intervention opportunity to aid in the fight against substance abuse and mental health complications.

Get SMART Jr. is specifically focused on teens in 9th through 12th grades. This 6-week program provides education on substances that teens may encounter, what abuse or use of substances can lead to, and the consequences associated with these choices. The program focuses on empowering teens to make positive decisions about substance abuse. It is interactive, visual, and highly engaging.

The Get SMART Youth program has been in partnership with Clinton Central Elementary School for two years, and the success of this program (taken part by 120 students to date) led to the desire for growth in the high school setting. “We have seen such a fun level of engagement and attendance by these students, and we felt more could benefit from expanding the age range available,” shared Stephanie Cooper, Executive Director and facilitator of Get SMART. “Not only is it great to partner with local organizations for this type of curriculum, but it is a huge win for our community as we continue to pursue more prevention and early intervention opportunities in the substance abuse community.”
